Amharic is the official language of Ethiopia used in government, business, government schools, most newspapers, and by educated people. The Amharic Basic Course presents lessons in dialogues, drills, exercises, and narratives. It includes samples of speech, explanations of basic language structures, and a variety of practical exercises. The course uses "transcription", but there is an introduction to the writing system at the end of the second volume.
